Life as a Powder Monkey!
Last week Mrs Garland took us into the hall to act out the life of a Powder Monkey! We had to listen very carefully to the orders that we had been given. First we tried to get some sleep on the hard floor. The Powder Monkey's had to sleep on the floor because all the sailors took the hammocks so it was very squished and uncomfortable. When Mrs Garland shouted 'Captains coming' we had to line up really quick in a straight line and stand completely still! (This was a little tricky to start but we got there in the end) Then we had to scrub the deck, serve breakfast and climb the rigging. Finally the battle started! In partners we had to work together to get the gunpowder and fire at the enemy ship. We had a lot of fun but we don't think it was as fun for a real life Powder Monkey.
We loved using the Bee Bots! The last time we used them we focused on how to program them. This time we decide to challenge our learning and create our own map. First we measured out how far the Bee Bot travelled when we sent it forward. It moved 15cm. We then got a ruler so we could measure out a 15cm square. This helped us to create the different squares to send the Bee Bots in different directions. We had great fun programming the Bee Bots to reach the end of our map!
We have been reading the story 'Stanley's Stick'. This week we created some questions that we would like to ask Stanley. We have been learning that when you are writing a question someone must be able to answer it. You then need remember to put a question mark at the end. Here are some of our questions:
Why did you throw your stick into the sea?
What else could your stick be?
Did you have a fun time at the beach?
Did you miss your friend Bertie when you were away?
Why did you have to go on the train?
We then created an interview panel so we could ask Stanley our questions!
We have been learning about 3D shapes. We have learnt that each 3D shape has edges, vertices and faces. Have a look at the 3D shapes that we created with marshmallows and sticks! Ask ask us about the different properties that each shape has:
This week we learnt all about Diwali! We read and acted out the story of Rama and Sita and learnt about the different things that Hindus do to get ready for Diwali. Here are some of them:
. Decorate their houses
. Make rangoli patterns on the floor to bring good luck.
. Buy special clothes to wear
. Give gifts to each other
. Make and eat lots of yummy food.
. Go to temple
We decorated our own rangoli patterns to put around the door into our classroom. We then all got to wrap a gift for someone in our class and make them a card, but we had to keep it a secret so the person would be surprised! We also made some lanterns to just like the Hindus did so Rama and Sita could find their way home.
We had ago at telling the story of Rama and Sita using shadow puppets. It was tricky to make sure we didn't get in the picture and block the light but I think we did really well. Have a look for yourselves!
Guy Fawkes! 31/10/16
This half term we are learning about different celebrations! This week we focused on bonfire night as lots of us were going to see fireworks at the weekend. First we learnt all about Guy Fawkes and his plan to blow up King James 1st and his government! We acted out the story by creating different freeze frames! Have a look at the pictures below, can you guess which part of the story we are creating?
On Friday 4th November we had our own bonfire party! We played lots of different games, learnt how to stay safe around a bonfire AND we got to use sparklers! We all created a poster about how to keep ourselves and others safe. Here are some of the things we came up with:
. Always wear a glove.
. Keep your arm out straight.
. Stand 1m away from other people.
. Do not touch the end of the sparkler, even when it has gone out.
. Keep the sparkler away from your face.
. A grown up must light the sparkler for you.
Everyone was amazing and followed these rules. Here we are using the sparklers!
